Hi Alan,
Very interesting. I dont know what they would have done with the 50 or so that where always at Grantham or Crewe in the late 1950's. Mind you the worst hazard we caused was the risk of falling over our brown carrier bags with string handles that we took our jam sandwiches. Along with our bottle of water.
Seriously though, I think this has more to do with Health and Safety and covering of backs than anything else. Maybe I am getting more cynical as I get older.
