Questions about either Mansfield central midland
 

Hi everyone ,would you please help, to fill in some memory details 1954-1957
1. What was the route of the train to Matlock?
2.Was the Matlock train at this time subject to attack by youths with airguns?(probably in the seperate 6/8 seat Compartments)
3.Were there trains to Skegness from the Mansfield Central?

To help with your research and give a broader insight into the subject there's a well written book By Paul Anderson and Jack Cupit entitled 'An Illustrated History of Mansfield's Railways' published by Irwell Press ISBN 1-903266-5-7 that may help.

Hello Brian, I traveled on the Mansfield Midland/Matlock route a few times, it passed through Sutton Junction, Kirkby in Ashfield, Pinxton and Selston, Butterley, Hammersmith, Ambergate Junction, Watstandwell, Matlock Bath and terminated at Matlock Town. I never heard of the train being shot at but that doesnt mean it wosnt.
On the question of Mansfield Central to Skegness I once went on a trip from there to Skegness in 1958 or 1959, Id be 10 or 11 at the time.

the route was the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway (LD&CECR) which was eventually LNER the Line started at Chesterfield Market Place

I only ever saw one train on it the crane removing the track from Horns Bridge but we used to park the car in the old station carpark at Skeggie although when my kids were small we saw a Class 37 in there one of the last freight trains ever apparently.

Grey, looking at the 1924 OS map I can see the route to which you refer.
Original route was Chesterfield & Lincoln railway, which, via Arkwright Town and the Scarcliffe tunnel, joined the L & NER (GCR Mansfield Branch) at Clipstone. It then proceeded over the North Eastern Railway (ECML) at Tuxford and onwards to Lincoln and Skeggie.

Thought it was independant of the ECML but it's afew years since I read the book about it we di walk a lot of the route between Chesterfield to the other side of Bolsover but they had filled the tunnels in by then although the cuttings and entrances are still there

Pity I can't get and record them now would be good historical records
