After a HUGE amount of faffing about I DID finally get it to work! Very interesting. What a difference! In the late 80s/early 90s I often stayed with a friend at Bromley-by-Bow, using her flat as a base for playing trains in London; for ages I walked about a mile and a half to/from Bromley-by-Bow underground station (overground actually), then noticed, in her copy of London A-Z that Canning Town station was just around the corner - a five minute walk! Once I discovered that, everything became easier; a direct line to Stratford, easy to change at West Ham to get to Barking or Fenchurch Street, or straight to Willesden Junction, or Richmond, then to Clapham Junction and Waterloo/Victoria. I never used Bromley-by-Bow again....
Such a change at Canning Town, it looks highly unsightly now, if you ask me, but I suppose it's made getting about even easier. :)
