R12M = £1M Link to story here Train driver fired over R12m crash 2011-06-08 12:37 Johannesburg - A train driver was fired on Wednesday after being found guilty of causing R12m in damage when he slammed into the back of a goods train on January 2, Metrorail said. "The dismissal of the driver is to reaffirm to the public and commuters that Metrorail's system is based on strict safety policies, rules and procedures," spokesperson Tony Games said. A disciplinary hearing found the driver guilty of speeding and ignoring two danger signals. The damages included the loss of three trailers and two motor coaches. A metro guard who was in the driver's cabin was injured and spent three months in hospital. "Metrorail views train accidents in a very serious light and believe that passenger safety is non-negotiable." Nineteen Metrorail drivers were facing disciplinary hearings for offences ranging from speeding to not heeding danger signals. Metrorail came under fire for its safety standards after two trains crashed into each other in Soweto in May because of driver error. - SAPA |
