A passenger was killed when fire broke out in a toilet of a commuter train.

Jungle telegraph suggests she set herself on fire in the toilet.

Without causing offense (I apologise in advance to anyone offended) a bit stupid doing it on a commuter train and a bit thoughtless not considering other passengers safety. But you wouldn't in that state of mind?

But whats done is done, I have sympathy with the family.

This act could have injured or killed other people - fire spreads rapidly on a train because of the air rushing in to feed it at high speed.

My sympathies lie firmly with the driver. Fire on a train is one of those nightmare scenarios you really prey will never happen to you.

As soon as he saw the flames he would have known that he a duty to save his passengers. An Emergency Evacuation is one of those things that you you do under enormous pressure at great speed....and then all the "experts" examine afterwards at their leisure with a fine tooth comb.

And when he approached the toilet he would have smelt that someone had died in there. Absolutely horrendous, because at that stage he would have seen it as his responsibility to have saved her, not knowing it was a suicide.

This really is a traumatic experience. There is a very real chance that he won't be able to drive again.

It's a sad example of the crazy way this country is going, if you know what I mean. :(

His outlook might be different once he realises it was a suicide, mine certainly would be, and has been in the past. I find this 'method' of suicide particularly selfish indeed.
Even if it wasn't, a fire in a part of the train which was not his fault and which he obviously can't access or monitor whilst driving really isn't his responsibility; his actions didn't cause this.
People die everyday - you just get on with it.

That's certainly the logical approach. I really hope that I can see it that way if something as nasty as that happens to me.

I certainly intend to continue in the grade to 66 (for both ambition & financial reasons) so the 'will to carry on' is there.

Time will tell, I guess.
