Just out of interest,
What would the scrap value be of say a Class 20 or 37??

Weight times scrap value of steel would give a stating point. So a 100 ton loco would raise £10,000 if the value of the metal was £100 per ton. Sounds about right.

What about assessing the valuable materals. they robbed the class 40 for its copper wire
I forget where it was ,also is there still a market for second hand engines and generators that would add to the value.We had an emergency power supply at an office I worked in, they could use second hand engine generator sets for that.
aldo the bogies if in good condition would have a value to the preservation people/
seems like a job for the accountants to assess the value

I thought the question was a simple case of scrap value rather than the value of carefully dismantling a loco which has a cost as well as a value.

It is a lot quicker and cheeper to just "attack" the loco with a gas axe and sort out the metals for scrap. My idea was to give an overal value for the crude process of scraping!

Do they contain asbestos ?
I dont know, but I just wonder if they used asbestos at all between the body shell and the frame.

Pretty sure that there is hardly anything, probably nothing at all, left with asbestos in. IIRC, there was a purge years ago to get rid of any stock or locos containing asbestos and those that did had to go to specialist companys for removal of said stuff before it was scrapped or re-sold.

Very true....

Sometimes you can get a loco below the scrap value, there are still some honest people out there that will sell a loco under the market value in order to ensure it's future. Ask at your local heritage railway if they have any for sale or look at traction ads or CAR services who often have good deals.
