Trainspotting and hello.
 

Hi everyone, i'm a student in my final year, and wanted to find out and ask a few questions on the topic of train spotting. I don't want to spam peoples inboxes who arent spotters, so if anyone could take the time to help, let me know. Thanks.

Hello tDR and welcome to the Railway Forum. Train Spotting was never done in Rhodesia, so I can't help you on the subject, but there are many ex and present spotters on the forum. So its just a welcome from me.

Hi tDR, Welcome to the forum, you will get all the answers you need.

I have been a trainspotter since 1949 (with a few breaks for family, career etc.). I am currantly an active spotter. I reached the top of the tree as a chartered aeronautics engineer and now use spotting as a relaxation in retirement.

Ask your questions and I will try to answer as fully as I can.

This is a hobby that can be as complex or as simple as the person wants

You can just mark off
engine numbers
or engines and multiple units
or engines, multiple units and coaches
or engines, multiple units, coaches and wagons
or engines, multiple units, coaches and wagons and departmental stock
or engines, multiple units, coaches and wagons, departmental stock and road rail vehicles

then there is photography as well as the esoteric spotting using headcodes and folk who enjoy recording timings of trains


I hope you enjoy your musings and theorising there is far more to trainspotting than men in anoraks
