DCC Steam Sounds

Am I alone on this??

Last night at our club a member bought in a number of steam locos with DCC sound.

I am old enough to remember the real thing hard working day in and out, these sounds were nothing like it. But the worse was the squealing brakes, it sounded like wheel flange noise in the tube and was awful. I never remember anything like that.

Now I am not totally against gismos and I really do like the sampled diesel sounds but who is programming this rubbish into steam models?

Jack

I have not heard sound equiped British Steam Locos on a layout but was not totally convinced when I heard a demonstration in my local model shop. Certainly not enough to part with the sums of money involved!

Best wishes,

John H-T.

Hi John.

I put this on another site and had the same response. Apparently the bass sounds are needed to get a proper reproduction. But the programming is often poorly done. The exahaust beats don't match the wheel revs and the "chuffing" continues when the loco is slowing down and then abruptly stops when the loco stops. As we all know steam is shut off when the loco breaks.

Hi Jack,

As I understand it Bass Sounds need large loudspeakers which would be too big to install in 00 scale locos.. There is also no "chuffing" when coasting.

Best wishes,

John.
