Preston Light Railway
Does anyone have any updated information on the Light Railway network planned for the city of Preston. The last I heard (March) was that trials are to take place in the autumn of this year on the trackbed of the disused Preston and Longridge Railway in the Deepdale area.

The test track behind the westview leisure centre is rumoured to be almost ready for launch, the prototype vehicles are allready in the factory adjoining the track.
I am building a gallery of shots from the development of this project starting with a few photos of the line in its derelict state. Some people may find these interesting, the gallery can be viewed at http://northwestrailphoto.fotopic.net/c1868415.html |
Adrian, that's an interesting set of P&L images on your website. Whilst you were photographing the line did you check out Deepdale Mill Street bridge. On the west side of the roadside there used to be a crest moulded into the bridge side and, if I recall correctly, an iron band with the P&L details moulded into a concrete flag outside Deepdale station on Deepdale Road, although this latter item may now have disappeared.
I believe the platform near Skeffington Road you mention was used for a very short period by a local cotton mill for coal and a rail chair track works on the opposite side of the line for unloading scrap. Let's hope this light railway takes off as it's sorely needed. |
