Tedious journey.

Well I have today seen a picture of a Diesel - electric 0-6-0 shunter No D3070 on the way from Darlington to London after a overhaul, the picture shows it at Cambridge being shunted by a "L1" class 2-6-4- Tank engine No 67701 in 1959.

For those of us that remember the 0-6-0 shunters, imagine THAT journey, Darlington to London, "Phew" it must have been the journey of a lifetime.

For extra long journeys such as the one you described the "norm" was for the locos to be "demeshed"and run "dead" in train normally a class "9" 25mph.

Northampton to Bletchley TMD for exam was a long enough trip on a 08 ! Did that once .
Also used to do a trip from Bletchley to Wolverton fairly frequent basis tripping vans to the warehouses , think mostly rolls of paper , that took long enough !

At Saltley (at various times) we used to have outbased 08's at Coventry Colliery,Nuneaton, and even as far as Banbury, and it took hours to change them over, which fortunately did not occur too often.15 mph Saltley to Banbury and back was a "nightmare" and the ride quality was terrible.
