Disaster !!!
 

Last night I run one of my 8Fs on my layout, I had got nothing else running and true enough this particular loco was one which I got hold of a long time ago and it was in a bad way, but I got it in my shed and managed to give it a overhaul and cleaned it up, but I dont run it as much as the others. So last night I thought I would give it a run, light engine round the layout and after about a couple of minutes It started making a "grating" noise AND THEN started smelling of burning and STOPPED !!! A complete failure ! :mad:,
Looks like a major job !!
Bloody hell it had to be one of my 8Fs didnt it !!

What type of 8F one of the latest or a tender drive?

Morning Jack, no mate one of the older models, I have had it quite a bit now, still never mind, just one of those things, I will have to see what I can do.

The problem could be the motor brushes could it not?
They may well be worn out.
When was the last time you oiled it?
Without oil it may have siezed up or the motore being an old one could have burned out.
I had a similar problem on my Hornby LYR 0-4-0St pug tank

Hello "me old fruit", I do keep them oiled and give them a couple of little drops before each run.

I think I may have got it!
On your models is there the copper strips con the connection between tender and engine? These may have come into contact and short circuited.
This happened with the Tri- ang A1 pacific.

On the other hand it might be a track originated problem so try a different loco ( a cheap one mind!) and see if the same thing occurs.

If it was burning I fear it may be the armature. Good news they can be replaced. Be careful getting the brushes out.
