Fencing anyone?
 

Me and my 10 year old son have just completed making our trackside fencing.
We have used 140gsm card fashioning the posts at 0.2 Scale metres square and 1 scale metre high, with 3 horizontal slats at 0.2m in height (or should that be width?) with the posts set at 2m intervals.
I now have a question, Can anyone tell me the distance between the sleeper ends and the inside face of the fencing? We think this should be between 1 and 1.5 metre to enable the trains to take the curves without hitting it, is this realistic or not?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Track ballasting will start soon, is the correct width at the sleepers 1cm as I have read somewhere?

Hi western52 and welcome to the forum. Without seeing your layout it is very hard to come up with any exact measurements but personally I would add at least 2 more metres to the minimum distance required for clearance. Don't forget that there needs to be a safe space for trackworkers etc. to take refuge.

In regards to your question there is no set distance from the end of the sleeper to the railway side of any fencing. If your after the safe distances from the nearest rail for placing your track staff figures then i can give you the actual rule book distances whitch are:- 100mph or less 1.25meters or 4', 101mph to 125mph 2meters or 6'6" hope that helps.

There are other factors that might decide where to place your fencing. If your tracks are on an embankment then the fencing will usually be at the bottom of this and if the tracks are in a cutting the fencing will usually be at the top. On level ground it will generally look better if you have a grassed verge and/or undergrowth between the trackbed and any fencing.
On model railways space is often a determining factor so a certain amount of compromise will be required.
