Newcastle Station
Im thinking of going up to Newcastle soon. Im wondering whats the best platform to be on. Also what the freight is like there?
|
Hi, I hope this reply is not too late. The main platform (2) is the best for viewing but if you are taking photos i suggest crossing the footbridge to platforms 3 & 4 or beyond.
I tend to visit for steam specials only these days so i am not too familiar with the freight workings but you do get 66s passing through. The east end of the station can be appealing with the castle as a backdrop. Cheers. |
Thanks for that.

Manors Station (mainline not Metro) is good for photos, if you position yourself right you can get the Tyne Bridge in the background. Good views can be had from the Multi-storey car park next to Station. Easiest way is to get train from Newcastle (1 minuite journey, sparse Newcastle - Morpeth Northern service) but its about a 7-10 minuite walk from Newcastle Stn. Chillingham Road on the Metro is a canny location as its adjacent to Heaton Depot, but the pallasade fencing is a pain (good views of Depot throat from footbridge).
Freight wise you be lucky to see anything other than 66's and the odd 67 light engine, the 60 on the Jarrow tanks and the DRS flasks do not pass through station. |
Another good vantage point althought not Central Station itself it so walk over Redheugh Bridge to the south [Gateshead] side of the Tyne where there is a good viewpont from which to see trains coming/going across King Edward Bridge and also some freight from the Teesside and south Tyne areas that by pass Central completely. Turn left out of Central and left agian to pass through the Centre for life complex there straight on to Redheugh Bridge. If you want a high level view of activity on the east side of Central the on top of the Caslte is you best bet as you can look over High Level bridge from up there. Mind you its a lot of steps to climb and can get windy when on top. You can look these areas up on Google Earth
