They probably didn't.
More than likely they stole them just for the sake of it.
Many years ago I remember some kids stealing detonators from my local station just because they were pretty colours and looked interesting. When they couldn't find a use for them they got bored and decided to throw them on a neighbours bonfire:eek:

Who said it was kids?

Unfortanly for other kids (me included) it propable was, so then we will all be called 'detonator thiefs'

I'm just wondering how they managed to steal them, why weren't they locked up etc...

Good point Jay. I apologise.
That'll teach me to respond without reading the article properly.:(

It reads to me they were on the track, probably at the site of a PLB protecting the possession.

I hadn't thought about that, that makes it worse, as they propably didn't know the line was blocked by a possesion, so they weren't just risking an explosion, but being hit by a train, and then because the dets had gone, risking a crash!!

I would think the risk to be lower as no train should really attempt to enter the possession, but of course should that have occured then it becomes dangerous on both levels.

The fact they're handling gun powder does, however, make that seem a little trivial somewhat.
