Old railway track next to a road in West Cumbria is to be taken away to improve visibility for drivers.

Anyone know where this is and what line it is ? My maps don't show a Thornhill in Cumbria ...

Thornhill is just south of Egremount and north of Beckermet on the A595

Three Quarters of a mile of track over five weeks? When the Beeching Axe came down, they did five miles in a day on some lines.

I'm not sure how just "removing track" can improve the visibility for drivers. I assume that there are some earthworks involved such as the removal of embankments etc.

Just looked on Google Earth,
Fopund tjhe road and where the track had been but no rails anywhere I could see. At one point the path of the rails could be seen beside the road but as it is on the outside of the curve it would hardly impede vision. Seems an excuse to liberate a bit more land for yet more not to be used factory units. John (G) |
