station

Hello everybody, as a new member I would like to start with a tale about my Grandfather Daniel Geoghegan. He was a railwayman most of his working life, based in London Road goods station Manchester as a checker. He retired in 1942 but collected money off passengers for the Railway Benevelent Society for years. He had a black labrador dog who always escorted him along the platforms and apparantly even onto the trains! As a young lad Grandad would often take me around the stables at the station and show me the horses and the smithy. It was an amazing world and something I will never forget. I have tried for years to try and get photos but it is almost as though it never existed. Basically it is the same with his work records, I know he started with the LNER in 1906 and I presume he finished with the LMS. but I can find out nothing. If I had thought all those years ago that it would be so hard to get relevant info, I would have taken Dad's Brownie with me and written everything down Grandad said !! By the way does anybody have any recollections of the Gorton Loco Works? We often wandered round as lads and sometimes got an escorted tour round !

Hello Exmanc and welcome to the Railway Forum. I know just what you mean about taking a camera with you. The young of today are lucky in that most of them have a camera, even if it is on their mobile phone. When I was a kid it would cost me 6 weeks pocket money to buy a film and have it developed. There was no way I could afford a camera. Then when I did get one, I was too busy taking photos of girls to worry about railways. Now it's all too late.

Welcome to the Forum Exmanc. Thanks for your story. I think we all wish we had taken more photos and listened more!

Look forward to more of your posts.

Best wishes,

John H-T
