Some time ago I was in Aylesbury having a coffee when a chap sat down and as you do we started to talk, I told him I ran a few forums one of them being trains. He told me he had an uncle who had left him several 8mm cine films of steam trains he had filmed at such places as Leighton Buzzard and Waterloo.

Anyway I agreed to pay to get them put onto DVD if he allowed me to post them on Railwayforum.net Today I picked up the DVD the film is from around 1962/3

the first ones appear to be of birds, ie Silver swan ? Mallard, Kingfisher? I presume these mean more to our members than me! there is also a beauty called sir keith Mark, with the Royal air force logo.

I will try and get some of it on the site this weekend, in all the film lasts about 35 mins . These are unique and I doubt the footage has ever been shown to anyone so we are in for a treat!

While watching Wild Swan pull away I noticed for the first time the twin columns of smoke from the double chimneys. I suppose that only having seen A4s before at Hatfield usually coming round the curve where the accident was the other year the exhaust would have appeared as a continuous stream with both columns merged together, still brought back happy memories.
Otherwise I saw Tornado at York yesterday, well only one bogie wheel, front buffer, open smokebox door and a pair of legs hanging out of the smokebox.
No idea what was going on though as I was only interested in Wren.

Why is the mallard in the film green but in swisses picture below Blue, was there two of them?

If the rest of the film is as good, then we are in for a good evening going through it, then bit by bit to see if we missed anything the first time around. I bet there will by many discussion about the films and the locos on it. As far as I'm concerned it was well worth the wait and I look forward to watching the rest of it.

Hi Steve,
Mallard originally carried the blue LNER livery at the time it set its World speed record in 1938. The railways were nationalised in 1948 and by the time the film was made in 1962/63 it had been repainted into the standard British Railways express passenger loco green. When it was withdrawn from service and preserved it regained its blue livery. You will also notice that in its blue form it also has skirts over its driving wheels. Great film by the way. Look forward to seeing the rest of it.
