Double decker strikes rail bridge (BBC News)
 

A double decker bus has hit a railway bridge closing a road but there are no reports of injuries.

I have friends who are bus drivers, and every time we have an incident like this they are amazed. They say that the bridges are always marked for height restrictions, and every bus driver should know how high his bus is.
Makes you wonder though about some of the bus drivers does'nt it?

it certainly does...I drive a van (one of several different ones in the fleet ) and I ALWAYS know if it will fit thru the Drive Thru at Ronalds Gaff....not lost a fridge unit yet!

Interestingly though this bridge is 13' and I thought Double Deckers were generally about 13'3"...if I'm not wrong there, is there no safwety margin allowed for?

I hit a disused railway bridge when I was a driver on Bristol Omnibus back in the 70's. My bus was 13' 6" high and the bridge was marked 13' 9". The actual height was in fact only 13' 4" as the road had been resurfaced twice over the years. No one thought to check that the bridge sign was still set at the right height. When checks were made, it was found that the sign on one side was correct but the other side was wrong and the road had been cold plain-ed before it was resurfaced, but not under the bridge. As I had just turned right into the road and the bridge is only a few feet from the corner, I was able to stop before too much damage was done to the bus. Bristol Omnibus had 7 open tops all vir low bridges.
