I've come to the experts! I've been clearing out my parents' garage, and there was my old Hornby train set from around 1950. No box, and quite rusty. Engine (Hornby) and another engine (non-Hornby) and rolling stock and a fair number of rails and points. I'm not really a train enthusiast (shhh - don't tell the other members!), but just want advice on how to dispose of these items. Advertise somewhere? Dustbin?

Anyway, greetings from Norfolk, UK, where the sun always shines, the North Norfolk railway thrives, and the Bure Valley Railway runs around 5 miles from my home.

So, keep puffing along, folks, and bang me an email if you can help me.

Hi an welcome! Not sure on value, but your best bet is the inevitable eBay auction. Failing that a small ad in Railway Modeller or similar publications or you could, if you don't mind a lesser price, try your local model shop should they deal in second hand goods.

You could also try advertising in some of the model railway forums, but please introduce yourself first. Personally I like this one and I also use New Railway Modellers....Google will bring up the URL.

Welcome Barrie, Your local model shop is often a good source of advice (the Guy in Sheringham High St seemed to know his stuff to me), Took a holiday in Norfolk (Edgefield) this year, we were impressed with the area and its attractions. Good luck with you Models.

We welcome everyone, Barrie - even non train enthusiasts! Looks like you have got some good advice already but I suggest trying to get two or three opinions as to whether you have got something worth the trouble of finding a specialist dealer, or just some old junk to offload on ebay. Because you have taken the trouble to ask here, it looks like you are doing that already.

Thanks chaps. Really appreciate the help. Looks like I'm off to Sheringham High Street before too long, and see what the man says. And maybe ask the kids to help me work out eBay. And not to use the dustbin!

Become a railway fan? - um... er.... well, I did take my kids on the North Norfolk Santa run about 30 years ago, and that was fun. And I have been on the train to London a couple of times, and the Red Arrow across the old Soviet Union, and a nice little job that took us across the Peruvian Andes with champagne. Now, come to think about it, I am starting to think you chaps (and gals) have got your heads screwed on the right way! Perhaps if I could sell that Hornby stuff I could put the money towards a ticket on the Orient Express, and ........... Thanks again, I really am getting some enthusiasm for railways again.

And if you have no takers for your old model railway stuff on eBay, don't ditch anything. Tell your local Freecycle group. Someone will take the kit off your hands.

Or even better, donate it to your local preserved line as I am sure they could sell it on and raise some cash perhaps?!

Those would be quite some travelogue stories I expect that many of us would like to hear.
