Rack Railways in Europe
I could not find anything on this theme on the Forum. I believe that we only have the one example in the UK, the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Are there others?
I am aware of one in France which is no longer in operation but which carried passengers from sea level in Monaco to La Turbie in the hills behind the principality. I have pulled together a short history of the line and as many photographs of it in operation as I can find. https://rogerfarnworth.wordpress.com...de-provence-15 |
Yes, I think Snowdon Mountain Railway is the only one in the UK. There are some in Austria & Switzerland, but not sure if there are any others around Europe.

Hmm, I was just about to jump in with both feet and nominate the Snaefell mountain railway in the Isle of Man, but fortunately I checked first. (wonkypedia link here..Snaefell mountain railway.)
I knew it had a centre rail, and having never ridden on it just assumed it was rack & pinion. According to web sources, the centre rail is for emergency braking but not for traction. Well at least I saved myself a public drubbing. Phew ! BW. Edit: I've just been informed by SWMBO that the IOM isn't part of the UK, so it wouldn't have counted anyway. Oh dear. |
No need to worry. The Isle of Man is part of Europe, I think?
