Barrow upon Soar bridge collapse causes rail chaos
 

The sudden collapse of bridge is causing major disruption to trains between the East Midlands and London.
The bridge collapsed at Barrow Upon Soar, near Loughborough, in the early hours, affecting the line north of Leicester.
Trains between London and Nottingham, Derby and Leicester have been cancelled or delayed.
Network Rail has been working to clear the route but does not expect to be able to re-open the route quickly.

Just glad that nobody was injured in the bridge collapse.

With all of the wet weather we've seen of late, I guess this has been a major factor in the weakening of the bridge structure.
What with this and the Southern sink holes, I hope we don't see any further incidents.

Unfortunately the vast majority of railway structures are well over 100 years old and will be more and more susceptible to sudden failure. British Railways in all it's guises has not been a good custodian of its real estate which is now in urgent need of rebuilding at what will be an eye watering cost. It is a legacy of being the World leader in railway building.
Question; Will the ultra- high speed lines around the World still be safe in 30 years time?
