i reckon its the silly season for news. Unless this study takes into account all polution factors (such as pollution caused by building cxars and roads)and the life-span of the varying modes of transport, it is useless.

Hi Arthur I agree and I wonder just how much pollution is caused in the manufacture of cars. Modern diesel trains are now built with the enviroment in mind. And some experiments have been carried out using Bio Diesel.

Top Gear publised that a while ago.

Though you have to remember that:
*A lot of people who commute by car go by themselves. Most commuter trains have people standing up. Some family car journeys have no spare seats while some off-peak trains have plenty.
* There are many different types of cars and trains each producing various amounts of pollution.
