Derailed US train in bursts into flames

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has so many rules governing the storage and transport of Hazmat yet there are still many serious spills like this. At least no one was hurt.

The fact that US railways are built to lower specifications than ours and the liquid tanks used are so enormous may have a great deal to do with the number of oil train derailments lately. Knowing that the mighty dollar rules everything, the tanks probably need far more baffles internally to stop the oil "slopping" in transit which causes instability and transient overloads on the track. From photos of the tanks it would appear that the bogies are of too short a wheelbase and are situated too close to the ends of the tanks. There really needs to be tests carried out urgently on the moving dynamics of these vehicles.

We had 7 years of transporting LPG from Humber Oil to Stanlow, without any problems
This train ran at 60mph. This train ran full to Stanlow and empty to Humber oil and ran 4 days per week, if not more at times. These trains finished for us in 2001. All this without incident. |
