Class 37 fanatics?

A friend and I went to the KWVR Diesel Gala a couple of weeks ago and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The visit was even more remarkable in that I finally witnessed the insane fanaticism of some rail enthusiasts for Class 37's. I think that the loco in question was 37175 which was on its first outing since preservation. A group of lads from Huddersfield who had obviously just come for the 37 seemed to spend the entire day ensconced in the buffet car of every train that the 37 worked. And what's all this 'Milords' thing about? Seemingly hanging from the windows by their toes, they shouted 'Milords' (and performed an exaggerated bow) to every tree, signal, cow , horse and photographer that they passed. All very entertaining, and I'm not complaining about their behaviour at all...I just don't understand it!

Seemingly hanging from the windows by their toes,

Don't the idiots that hang from trains in this manner realise they are putting their lives in danger.

I am not trying to take away peoples enjoyment of their day out on tours or events but a little thought as to where they are would be helpful

Les

I know what you mean Les, but at least they are not doing it on the national system. I've noticed on the few preservation lines that I've been to that any obstructions such as trees etc are kept well under control and cut back. I reckon that the preservation lines realise that people will do such things and plan accordingly.

This subject does remind me of the time many years ago when a friend of mine missed having his head rearranged by a Peak somewhere around Gloucester literally by a couple of inches. It was a long time before he ever stuck his head out of the window without checking again!

Thanks for that John. That's a really interesting site. One of the things that fascinates me is how that sort of cultural thing spreads, and the differences (like when I was asking about 'bog' and 'bug' carts). It's similar to urban myths I suppose.

It's nice to think that there must be one person in the country who started the whole 'My Lords' thing off. I wonder if he realises? When I used to go to rock concerts in the seventies, for some odd reason someone would always shout out 'Wally'. It would always happen, but nobody ever seemed to know where it came from. Strange.

..............sorry!! Waffling again! :D

People do do this on the national network when on railtours with the older traction like 37s.

A girl who owns a Class 37 and who's Dad owns a Brewery/Pub would be a grand thing ;)
