Nottingham station to close for six weeks (yes, six weeks)
Here are the details:
http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/St...#axzz2PKxSlSwb I know it's a big project but have you ever heard of any city's main station being closed for so long - and in the middle of summer? Reading station is in the middle of a massive rebuilding programme so it was closed over Easter but all open again this morning. I wanted to go over our massive new footbridge but it's beyond the gateline so guess I'll have to wait until I'm next buying a ticket to go somewhere. |
I Remember Crewe in 1985(2 June - 21 July) when exactly the same was done.
Freight lines were used for through traffic & a "shuttle" service was in operation from Stafford. I still have leaflet produced by British Rail giving details(including detailed plan of old/new point work) Crewe was an even bigger project than Nottingham |
Have they finished the bridge going over the station for the new tram line, following the track of the old Great Central Railway?

Me and some mates were chatting over a beer recently and came up with a plan that could be a winner. Take the tram through the Weekday Cross tunnel and into the Victoria Centre basement car park and build a platform, then through the north tunnel and out to Bulwell on the old Great Central trackbed. High speed commute into the city centre from Rise Park, thus reducing bus congestion at peak times. |
One problem this is in the way
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...pg%3B800%3B600 The Art gallery was opened a couple of years ago and sits on the old track bed it would not be possible to run the trams into the Victoria centre. |
Point two the cutting between the the Mansfield Road Tunnel & the Sherwood Rise Tunnel has been filled in. (Site of Carrington Station)
Point three the cutting at the North end of the Sherwood Rise Tunnel(near Perry Road) has been back filled. And the site of Bulwell Common Station Has been built on. |
And any way the Thurland Street tunnel carries heating pipes to the Victoria Centre.(Not much room for the tram.
The sites of Bagthorpe Junction and Old baseford have all been extensively built on. It you want any photos there is a very good book Great Central Then & Now By Mac Hawkins now in a third edition.Editions are 1989,1991 & 1999 It is now over 45 years since the Central closed . |
Been to Nottingham today no bridge over station............yet
I suspect it will be put in place at the same time as the station is closed for the six week period. |
Should be an interesting few weeks, what with all the tram works, the A453 work beginning and the closed station! They have said a lot of traffic will be diverted to the parkway station! Down the A453 I imagine, passing all the tram works! Like I said should be an interesting few weeks!
Good luck everyone Phil |
