A Department for Transport study has revealed some of the most congested trains in England are running at almost double capacity

I remember back in the 90s traveling from Brum to London having to stand most of the way.

Whilst the railways offer a walkup service without prior booking there will allways be problems of overcrowding on some services. Commuters always want to catch the last service that will get them to the office in time for a 9 o'clock start. In the past the variation of fares has been tried but with so many City workers having their fares paid by their employers, it would have little effect now.

I can remember sitting in the vestibule of a MK3 from Doncaster to KX not an upset as it was a spotting trip but felt sorry for the commuters on it lots of folk standing and even more people getting on at Peterborough and that was in the 70's on a full length Intercity HST too

Let's face it, EVERY passenger boards a train at their OWN risk, as they are NOT ordered to, so Why complain when a seat is not free, no matter what they paid for their journey? We pay to go from A to B and by whatever means the railway can find to use, including, IF need be, a helicopter.

My best experience was with Midland Mainline back in the 90's.
I used the train to and from London for work and in those days the firm always paid for First Premier with breakfast.
Going to London was OK but coming back from London to Nottingham was a nightmare.
An earlier train had been cancelled so everyone had piled onto my train.
The train was packed so first class was full of £5 standard class upgrades.
I wasn't allowed to stand in first class despite having a legitimate £80 ticket and arriving 10 minutes before departure so I had to stand all the way to Leicester in Standard Class.
The ticket inspector said I was entitled to a refund on my ticket, of £5, the cost of upgrading.
He told me if I wasn't satisfied I'd have to write to the company.
Needless to say I wrote it off as a bad job.

In 1955 during an ASLEF strike my Brother and I travelled from Paddington to Newton Abbot in a double headed train.(NUR drivers obviously) We had a holiday booked so had to go. The train had about twenty coaches on and took ten hours. Full and standing all the way, stopping at every station. We sat in a smoke filled compartment with a load of sailors. You probably don't believe it but I swear it's true. John.

Back in the late 60s and early70s I was in the Royal Engineers (Longmoor) and travelled many a time up to London having to stand and often from King Cross to Peterborough (where I moved to from Lincoln.) mind you in them days there was a buffet car with a bar and standing there drinking McEwans all the way was not such a bad thing? Naturally most of the train was smoking including the bar and only a half carriage was given over to non-smokers! Totally different to now.
