Hello I need some help in identifying something form my garage

Hi, Im very new to this so please bear with me. My Dad has found what we think may be a very old carriage lamp from the turn of the century in our garage. It did belong to my Grandad when he worked on the craines, trackside. I have pictures and wondered if anyone knows where I can find out a bit more about it please :)

Looks very much like a Guards Handlamp.
Does it have 3 different coloured lenses? What area of the country did he work in? Any idea what type of Cranes? |
Welcome to the Forum Katyemorely. I would say it was certainly pre grouping (1923) and probably quite a bit older. Are there any marking on the case which might give some clues?
Best wishes, John H-T. |

So it may be a private railway |
Hello and thank you so much for your speedy replies. Yes it does have 3 coloured glass lenses, red, green and clear. The lamp twists so that you can change colour. The wick looks like its never been lit. My Grandad used to work on the Cranes (not sure what kind of cranes though)around the railways in stocksbridge, Nr Sheffield and the only markings I can find on the lamp are BR and E. thanks again you are all so helpful. Kind regards Katey :)

Hello again, My Dad has said that my Grandad used to work on the cranes that moved the steel from Sheffield steel works...
|
If its got BR & E on it it will be British Railways Eastern Region. As said above a guards lamp.

So, it's not as old as it looks.:)

Hi Katyemorley and welcome from me too. I see you have some answers to your questions. Looks a nice piece of kit for sure.
Anyway all the best Regards Phil |
