Hello, my name is Malcolm Smith and I have just joined the forum. I have been interested in trains for the past 65 years, and focus on the area which was the original LSWR. I am embarking on my 4th layout which will be modelled on Southampton and for which I hope to operate a realistic timetable set in 1988. I am taking information from my own observations and also the WTT. Although I know what locomotives to use in most cases from my own observations, I am stumped by some of the terminology in the WTT as to loco type. The references are D1364; D140; D210; D280; D315; D420; ED350. I believe D420 is a class 47 and am certain that ED350 is a class 73, however, I am not sure about the rest which should include class 33 and class 31. Any help would be most appreciated. I might be able to help if i am reading this correctly.
Sad git as i am i do have a few logs with numbers relating to the mid 70's.
D1364 is not a loco i know of or can find in my records. Close to some class 47 but no exact match.
D140 = 46003
D210= 40010 Named Empress of Britain
D280 = 40080
D315= 40115
D420 = 50020
ED350 i have no idea sorry.

Sorry forgot to add....
Class 31 were generally numbered D5501 to D5875
Class 33 were generally numbered D6501 to 6585 for 33/0
33/1 were D6511 to D6580 and 33/2 for the Hastings line were D6586 to D6589

These are NOT definitive numbering but does give you an indication of where they were going with the numbers.

How sad am I ???

WTT loco classification
 

Hello Folks - thanks for the welcome. Thank you also for the replies but I think we are on the wrong track here. The loco references were taken from the 1988 Working Timetable by which time locos were numbered by class. Also the WTT would not allocate specific locos. The WTT references seem to indicate locos by power range but I have not been able to find these in any reference book. The multiple unit references in the WTT are easier as DEMU referred to the Hampshire units although Sussex and Tadpole units also made an appearance. DMU(S) referred to the sprinters which were replacing the class 33 hauled sets that year. I find it a puzzle and would love to get to the bottom of it. Regards to all.
