Hello - 'Newbie' here from York!
Only recently got in to Steam and as I am in York I thought I would make use of it and get down to York Station and see some of the main line steam as it happens! Anybody got any tips or advice about when to go or how to find out whats on or where to stand to get the best views? Its all new to me so any advice would be welcome
thanks! Chris |
Hello skyhunter66 and welcome to the forum. An excellent website exists at http://www.uksteam.info which lists all steam workings in Britain and will usually have times added about 4 or 5 days prior to each run taking place. Please bear in mind that it's all unofficial and can only show what's been supplied, if no one supplies the website owner with times he can't post 'em. As to where to stand? I would not like to make a guess, I have been on York station when steam has been running and the crowd was huge! Four deep along platform three. It's a case of if you see a gap, fill it. Hello Skyhunter66
Nice to have another York enthusiast on the Forum. Lived at Dringhouses from 1945-61 during steam days and York is a great station. Yes I have seen many photos of steamers to Scarborough on platform 5. They also use the three northern platforms 9-11 sometime for steam trains. Things have change and I don't think there is a goods train originating from York now. Make the most of the railway scene there. I have come across an article re reopening the line to Market Weighton but I have my doubts about it ever being a paying proposition. My regards to York! |
Hi Christopher - yes the plans to open up that line - York to Hull has been in existence for some time and its a friend of mine who is Chairman of the committee. I hope they succeed but in the current economic climate they are up against it!

Hello Chris and welcome to the Railway Forum. Good luck with your visits to York Station

A warm welcome from me too Chris and hope you enjoy our company.
I guess being in York you must have been to the NRM! They are having the Steamfest in June. looks to be well subscribed but worth a visit for sure and they have quite a large collection of record breakers. Try http://www.nrm.org.uk/AboutUs/PressO...lfest2012.aspx best wishes Phil |
well thank you everyone - glad I joined! So I am heading off to York this Saturday to see Britannia on her way though and looking forward to that. I hear she has been in situ at the NRM so will see if she is still being based there.
