I notice with this american railway they leave it to the last minute before the barrier comes down! Is that not a tad dangerous?

Hi Phil

It's not just the Americans. Over here there's often only about 7 seconds at line speed between the barriers going down and the train arriving. Of course the lights and wailers have been operating well before the barriers drop - so the car drivers have had their warning. It's their choice if they ignore it.

I'm told this is because people are so impatient nowadays they get the urge to go around the barriers if they're made to wait for much more than a minute. There's a Network Rail campaign running on TV at the moment that shows a man who decides that he wants to swerve round the AHBs after waiting "too long".
