Locomotives Used in Heartbeat (TV Series)

Was watching Heartbeat the night before last and it was the episode from either the first or second series when there was heavy snow and a train hauled by steam loco which from memory was 30108 or something similar.

When the train crashed / derailed at the points and when we saw the rescue train arrive it was formed of Diesel Loco No D7541.

Now what I would like to know is weather or not this loco is now in preservation or not and how come the steam loco was a type 3 Normal and all other episodes of Heartbeat have BEEN type 4 Steam locos pretty much each time.

From the NYMR diesel web page

"D7541 was built at Derby, entering service at Toton on 10 April 1965. Following spells at various Midland Region depots it found itself at Crewe Diesel Depot in 1986. On 2 October that year, it hauled the new electric loco 89001 from Crewe to Derby. It was one of the last of its class to venture deep into Western Region territory on 20 January 1987, when it worked the Bridgwater - Sellafield nuclear flask train. Despite officially being withdrawn on 18 March 1987, it took the Crewe Inspection Saloon for a tour along the Cambrain line the following day!

25191, as it was by then, arrived on the NYMR in January 1988, and it remained in this guise until its controversial repainting into green for the 1992 Diesel Day, when it was named 'The Diana' after the wife of Lord Downe. Later that year, the loco visited Thornaby Open Day. It has also appeared in episodes of 'Casualty' and 'Heartbeat'.

It is currently stored out of service at Grosmont."

Steam engines that appeared in the series were just what was available on the day.
Including 841 Southern S15, Dame Vera Lynn WD 2-10-0, various black 5s, 80135 Std Tank.
and more than likely many others.

If memory serves me correctly, I think 30841 was used for the crash in the snow at the entrance to the tunnel at Grosmont - loco was kept on the rails but coaches scattered across the crossover.
