Gatwick Express units
I have read that Southern have taken on some former Gatwick Express class 442 units - today I saw a 10 coach 442 (2 units) at Eastbourne still in Gatwick Express livery. One of the units was No.442410, but I couldn't see the other unit's number & I didn't have time to get off my train. It appeared to be 'not in service' so I'm guessing it was running trials perhaps? I also saw unit No.442405 at Brighton later in the day.

Gatwick Express is part of Southern. Gatwick Express when it was its own franchise never had any 442s, they were all taken after Southern took over.

Thanks for the info.

They are mainly used on Gatwick Express services, hence the branding.

The 442's a.k.a. Plastic Pigs, were used originally on Southwestern services out of Waterloo until replaced by 450 and 444 Desiros.
Perhaps you're thinking of the 460's a.k.a. Darth Vaders. |
Nope, the Plastic Pigs have found a new life on the Gatwicks.
When Southern took over the Gatwick Express they extended the service, and the 442s are used for the extra capacity. |
