Black 5 wheelbase
Why were the later Black 5's built by H A Ivatt have an 8 inch longer wheelbase than the earlier locos built by Stanier?

Welcome to the forum Streak19, afraid I can't answer your question but understand that Ivatt introduced several design improvements on Stanier's original GWR based design.
I will be very interested if anyone can give the answer. |
Hello Streak 19. As Master Cutler said, Ivatt introduced several design improvements, one of which was fitting Timken Roller bearings to certain Locos. To quote from the book "Stanier Locomotives" by Brian Haresnape (Page 48), "To accommodate the Timken axle boxes under the ashpan, used on some Locomotives, the trailing driving wheels on these final batches were moved 4in. back". Where the other 4 inches came from I have no idea.
Hope this helps. Regards, 62440. |
Hello streak19 and welcome to the forum from all the staff, enjoy and all the best.

Thanks for this. It must have been a real pain when visiting the works as any parts commonality with other earlier Black 5's (ie coupling rods) would have been lost.
