A railway line across northern England is expected to be closed for days after a freight train derailed in Carlisle.

Wagons loaded with cement left the tracks near the Petteril Bridge junction, off London Road, shortly after 20:00 BST on Wednesday.

It caused "significant damage" to the bridge, track and lineside equipment, according to Network Rail, but no-one is believed to have been injured.

Services between Carlisle and Newcastle and Carlisle and Leeds are affected.

A railway magazine writer believes repairs to a railway line in northern England will be "challenging".

An interim report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch found a damaged wheel was to blame for a freight train coming off the tracks in Carlisle.

Tony Miles from Modern Railways Magazine said the operation to lift the damaged wagons with two containers of cement powder, which are still in the River Petteril, would be logistically difficult.

Network Rail has said the line is likely to be closed for weeks.

Complications delay Carlisle freight derailment recovery.

Hopes that the lines to the south east of Carlisle would be reinstated within one week have been dashed. Last week’s derailment of a fully laden cement train, at a critical junction, is proving more difficult than hoped. Recovering the rolling stock, and assessing significant damage to infrastructure at Petteril Bridge Junction, is proving challenging for engineers.

Operations are continuing to recover several freight wagons which derailed a week ago on the outskirts of Carlisle. The accident has blocked lines to Newcastle on the east coast, and access to the Settle and Carlisle route. The latter provides vital freight capacity as an alternative to the heavily trafficked West Coast Main Line, Europe’s busiest mixed traffic route.

Carlisle progress but complications put UK reopening back.

Initial hopes that the derailment at Carlisle would be resolved in a matters of days have resolved into weeks. The cement train that came off the tracks in the south east of the English city remains a challenge for engineers. Now a huge crane has been brought on site to lift the stricken wagons away from the crash site.

Damage to infrastructure at Petteril Bridge Junction, the site of the recent cement train derailment, is proving much more extensive than had been hoped. Engineers have a long shift ahead of them, in the hope of reopening the affected Iines sometime in December. Meanwhile traffic heading south and west of Carlisle is restricted to the busy West Coast Main Line.

Network Rail, the national infrastructure agency, has released aerial images of operations with the 800-tonne crane, brought on site to lift the derailed cement wagons from the line side and the River Petteril. They say rail engineers are making good progress to recover the derailed freight train, before major repairs can take place to get the railway reopened as soon as possible.
