Ponders End

Ponders End level crossing, on the Liverpool Street / Cambridge mainline. 1950s photo shows how many workers travelled to and from work. Ponders End station was one of our stops on the Liverpool Street / Hertford East runs.
The level crossing is now closed as is "The Railway" pub next door. (see link)

I started as a Guard from King's Lynn to LST via Ponders, then became an RPI at Bishop Stortford for a while, working this line.

We bought coke to burn on the fire at home. Sometimes a Saturday morning job for me was to push a big old pram a couple of miles to the "Gas Light & Coke Co" at Ponders End Gasworks to collect one hundredweight of coke priced 3s/6d (seventeen and a half p) Ask a ten year old kid to do that today.:D

Going by the shape of the tank badge, and the position of the front wheel spindle I'd say it was a Royal Enfield.:)
