Have they any idea why the bus driver crossed the line? Even if the booms are up, I always look before crossing a railway line.

Could that be because of the law in South Africa, where all vehicles stop at level crossings 27vet? I know that I tend to slow right down at level crossings even if there is a gate. Old habits die hard.

That's right Syd. I was knocked off my motorcycle once when pulling off at a green traffic light. The guy came through the cross road against the red. Lucky I wasn't hurt but my bike was damaged. Since then I always look even when lights are green and that extends to railway crossings. Most active railway crossings in South Africa have a boom or compulsory stop.

Don't think that it cannot happen here.
This clip shows that it could even with full barriers.

Cripes, what a situation. The bus passengers must have been terrified. I presume someone rang the emergency number and got the signals put to danger, so the barriers could be lifted again.

Looks to me as though the tractor driver jumped the red lights as well, no mention of that driver going to court though.

I think that the bus was actually on a school service.
But had just dropped the last passengers off a few minutes before.

The trapped bus was spotted by the signaller on the CCTV before he put the signals to green.

Another case of a vehicle driver disregarding the boom gates down under resulting in 1 dead and quite a few injured.

Quote:

THE driver of a truck involved in Saturday's horrific collision with a train in Dandenong appears to have smashed straight through level crossing boom gates, the state's top transport safety official says.
The 69-year-old truck driver from Narre Warren North, whom police have not named, went through the crossing in Abbotts Road about noon on Saturday. He walked away unhurt, but the crash left a 43-year-old Cranbourne man on board the train dead - the first death of a passenger on Melbourne's electrified rail system in decades.
