I now have the space for my layout (OO scale) ready.

The space is U shaped and 2.85 metres wide.
Effectively I have a rectangular space 2.85 m by 44cm, with two wings projecting outwards. The left wing is 44cm wide and projects 95cm out the left wing is 86cm wide and projects 13cm out from the main (back) part. As an added design complication the space is under a sloping roof which gives 6cm clearance at the back, 32cm at the front of the right wing and 70cm at the front of the left wing.

I'd like to model mid 50s BR steam (perhaps some early diesel as well)

Any suggestions on the best sort of layout for this space?

This is part of a bigger scheme at my Club. It is also, following an unplanned move, going to form the basis of my layout at home. I haven't updated the thread for a bit so there is more to report. Will try to get round to it soon.

Each board is 1100mm x 50mm.

Hi Don,
You might have trouble doing a 1950's layout with those measurements - we were still talking in feet and inches then!

Think you need to look at 2mm scale (N Gauge) as unless you're doing a layout you can move about for exhibitions then there's not a lot you can do in any other scale

basically you are looking a at Y shaped terminus on one leg (wing) with small shed and turntable on the other leg and a fiddle at the opposite end

Hello Don and welcome to the forum. I am not a modeller but just a thought, what if you had a two tier system where the track would run along the back at a height above the lower level and include a viaduct and tunnel? Just a thought. Anyway enjoy and I look forward to your progress

Hi Don,
If I've understood correctly your description of the space you have available I can't visualise any OO layouts that would allow you to actually run trains for any distance. Personally I would use most of the main 2.85m x 0.44m space to model a medium size MPD. On the left leg you could model a section of mainline between two tunnels onto which the MPD would be connected. This mainline would lead via a tunnel to an imaginary main station/goods yard and would be where your locos came from or went to after servicing. I'm sure that the space you have available would enable you to model a reasonable size shed with turntable and coaling facilities.
