Barmouth Viaduct shuts for 25m renovation
A Grade II listed viaduct will shut on Friday for a 25m renovation project to begin.

Rather than face one long closure, Barmouth Viaduct will close three times for short periods.

The entire length of track on the structure will be replaced, along with a large number of the timber and metal elements.

Built in 1864 and 2,690ft (820m) long, Network Rail says Barmouth is its only major timber‐built bridge still in use.

Many thanks for this Philip, hope you don't mind but I've shared it with the North Wales Nostalgia group on Facebook with acknowledgement to rf.net.

This looks like quite an undertaking, but absolutely necessary. I followed the renovations to the Watercress Line in recent months during my travels there, and even those were a lot of work Sadly this covid fiasco has left us enthusiasts high and dry...

This first initial closure has been extended by 48 hours to 05:30 on Wednesday 4th November - Network Rail are taking advantage of low passenger/traffic volumes due the current 'Firebreak' lockdown in Wales to complete extra work in this first closure period.

Network Rail have reported the successful completion of Phase 1 of the Barmouth Bridge restoration:
The second of three planned closures is scheduled for 17th September 2021.
