Hello - question.

Hello,

Although I like trains I have registered on here for my little boy who at 7 is hugely in to trains.

We live in Leeds and just discovered that the Flying Scotsman will be running on the North York Moors railway for a little while, starting on Saturday.

He'd be absolutely over the moon to see it! I'm guessing that all stations along the route will be heaving, especially Pickering.

I just wondered if anyone please knew of anywhere that we could park up on route and watch from a safe distance as it passes though? I'm not too keen on the idea of a hugely busy train station even if we would get the best photos there.

Thanks in advance,
Jackie

Hi Jackie.

I might try the footpath from Grosmont station to Darnholme road bridge.

Zoom in on this Google Earth link and see what you think.

Hello Jackie and welcome.
There are some great spots along the route, but they will be busy, especially the first week.
I would leave your visit untill the second week and then visit mid week if possible.
I went to see her at Bury and it was mental. But worth it.

hello Jackie
There are some great spots along the line..
The problem this weekend with be car parking - Remember that all the seats on the Scotsman are sold out so going lineside to watch it pass is the other option. Getting near a station to park will be a major problem.
As said above, the footpath from Goathland station to Darnholme will give an excellent view - but there will be lots there ! - parking the problem at Darnholme and Goathland+ the station here
My recommended spot to see it would be at Moorgates - were the line crosses over the road a mile from Goathland heading towards Pickering - Again lots will be there and parking an issue - but its a long straight here and longer to see it coming, passing and going away.

Another spot very near Moorgates is where the Railway crosses the Lyke Wake Walk at the summit of the railway.
On the A169 just after you pass RAF Fylingdales radar station.
Down the hill and just as the road bends right to go over a bridge there is a parking area to the left. A short walk will take you to the top of a slope looking over the railway.
A bit more walking will take you to the foot crossing.

Just to confirm that the operating days are Sat 12th to Sun 20th only and also no service on Mon 14th and Friday 18th.

Hello MrsG & son and welcome to the Railway Forum. So good to hear of a mother wanting to help her son with his passion for trains. It will keep him on the straight and narrow to have an interest, until he discovers girls, but with a bit of luck he will be able to get her to enjoy our love of railways as well. He would also be welcome to join the forum where he could ask questions and get answers from people who still work on the railway and people who have just like him, have a love of the subject.
