Class 47 How many now???

Last Saturday 14th I travelled from Penrith to Exeter and it caused me to wonder just how many 47' are still operational on British Railways. on that day I saw 1842 at Crewe in original green livery also 47847 also at Crewe in Largo logo blue and at Bristol D1914 also in green livery. On the gallery this week was 47786 and D1648 (formerley 478410 both being named. Class 477?? are often pushing at the back of steam trains so there must be quite a few. Probably more the number of LMS class 5 4-6-0. has anyone a comprehensive list with their usual locations?:

Christopher, on http://www.wnxx.com/fleetstatus/ is a full updated list of all extant 47's including preserved locos. The ones running on network rail have their numbers in black type. hope this helps.

For your additional information there was a batch of approximately 33 of the old class 47's converted to the now modern class 57's which are again findable on the wnxx site with their old 47 numbers given. I am not sure but i think most of them are all still main line running with perhaps a couple of examples, poorly maintained and or abandoned by their previous operators. Just a bit more info for ya buddy.

Not counting the 47's (or 57s) on preserved railways, there are around 35 still working on the network system. :)

Thank you friends for your help indeed. I have been amazed to find so many old diesels still in service so that I wonder why they were condemned. Apart from the London - Penzance train I don't see much action in the far south west. I had not seen a 47 since 2007 in Devon but did see 47832 at Norwich in June 2011. My interes has been reawakened. Thanks.
Chris
