Old steam train children's book

Hi all, I found a "stump the bookseller" description of a book. Partly I'd like to help the person out and partly I'd like to find the book for myself , so here is the description:
– The story is about a steam locomotive operator (a boy or young man)
– At some point, he wants to either eat lunch or take a nap near the train
– However, he is bothered by the noise of the steam coming out of the train
– To solve this, he puts something over the steam valve (I’m pretty sure it’s either a lunch bag or a hat)
– This blocks the steam from escaping from the train and causes it to explode
– I’m pretty sure the book mentions nobody could find him (maybe they find his hat or some article of clothing?)

I figured people who hang out here would be more likely to have run into such a book more than the general public. Thanks!

That's a new one to me I'm afraid. Good Luck!

Back in the early days of boilers there was a few cases of safety valves being screwed down to increase boiler pressure. A few of these incidents are covered in the excellent Red For Danger by L T C Rolt. From memory I think one actually mentions some poor unfortunate chap who screwed down the valve and when the boiler exploded it took the individual with it although he was nowhere near the loco itself.
I can see where the author got the idea from but I am unaware of the book.
Cheers John
