I've Got to get me one of these!!!!!!

Will have to get a copy of Hornby Mag for the details. Perhaps I can sell my unmade Kitmaster Kit to help finance it!

Best wishes,

John H-T.

A few years ago I would have said no chance but now anything seems possible!

Best wishes,

Just managed to get a copy of the Hornby Magazine with details of the Hatto's LMS Garratt Project. Looks promising. I note that the pre-order price is £199 but that they will go up to £219 soon after release.

I started to work out the cost of all the bits to motorise my Kitmaster Kit and it looks like it would cost more (with two motors) than buying the Hattons Model! This includers producing a metal chassis. There is also the problem of getting the front motor into the front tank. It would have to drive the leading driving axle. Could be quite a complex job. All in all, if I really want a LMS Garret, I would be better off buying the Hatton's one. Then I can blame them if it doesn't work!

All in all I think £199 is a very reasonable price for what is being offered and am leaning towards ordering 7983 in LMS Black. It would of course need to be weathered!

Best wishes,

John H-T.

I agree this is a great additon to the RTR range, and whilst it is worth every penny I am sure, the hobby is being split into two halfs.

Many of our model club members are on low incomes and could never afford things like this.

I hope this doesn't become a rich man's hobby in the future.

I could just about afford a loco like this, but I don't think I would get away with it on the household budget! I think I'd I sooner make one!

farren 26th August 2011 20:03

i would say it's all ready a rich man's hobby lets see a top end loco with sound £220 ish and say 5 nice pulmans coches £50 each so all together so thats £470 just for a nice train which most pepuil would like thats my rent for seven weeks or some ones morage. but i have all ready started saveing up £5 a week should have enough plus some for new wagons to go with my new garratt when it comes out.

John H-T 26th August 2011 21:07

Like Farren I regularly set aside money so that hopefully I have enough to pay for things when they come out. The problem is that nothing happens for months and then three of four models arrive at once, hence the need to set money aside!

Best wishes,

John H-T.

DSY011 26th August 2011 22:18

I do the same John-HT. I put £25 away each month. So it will only take me 8 months to pay for one of the Garratts. As they say they will be ready for Christmas 2012, I have plenty of time to save up. Mind you I already have £55 saved.
All I need now is for someone to do a RTR Rhodesian 15th Class or a 20th class Garratt. I would even be happy with a 14th class one. 'Fat chance'.

Tony 27th August 2011 16:17

Hi Syd,
If your dreams came true and you got your Rhodesian Garretts; where would you get the Rhodesian firemen from?

farren 27th August 2011 19:08

Rhodesia where esle!

Zimbabwe surely??

DSY011 28th August 2011 10:42

It was Rhodesia when I lived there, It was Rhodesia when I left there. To me it will always be Rhodesia.
As for a Rhodesian fireman, I did once drive and fire a loco on shunt duty when my driver was too two sheets over the yardarm and fell asleep in the fireman's seat.

farren 28th August 2011 21:14

ok i know all the LMS gerretts where all cut up but did of the same class survive else were

I think the LMS Garratts were unique, and used lots of standard "Midland" bits in their construction.

That was the problem with them, too much meddling from Derby. If Beyer Peacock had been given a chance to build them to their specifications they would have brilliant.
