If its a 31 take a gas mask as the fumes can kill.

The 31's? Overweight and underpowered but still 'bowling along' for well over 54 years!

John_142 15th July 2011 15:42

iitd be good if they could loan the class 31 to the ELR for a gala to run it with the ELRs Blue and Grey Stock as it would be just like old times on the North West Express Blackpool- Liverpool.

Sounds very interesting!! big 31 fan here!!

I prefer the 31's to the Ugly 37's Anyday. I know there may well be more 37 fans, but years ago I saw and rode behind So many, I slowly began to dislike them, as it appeared they were the ONLY class of diesel about.

The 31s are one of the best looking first generation diesels. In the 80s I used to travel down to Carlisle from Edinburgh and they would usually work the Leeds-Carlisle trains. Never heard of any travelling to Scotland. Just out of interest does anyone know if any of them ever worked north of the border in the 80s?:)
