Scrap a Diesel Loco !!!!

If You could cut up an entire Class of Diesel Loco which would it be ????

Madcaravanner 21st December 2010 12:52

As a rail enthusiast not a railway worker I suppose I will have a different view from some of the other members.

Personally I think I would get rid of the class 66 and I will say in preference for the class 56/58/60's they were never given the chance by the TOC's to prove themselves and things like the 58 was designed to allow easy upgrading not selling or scrapping
I do like how they keep having to resurrect the class 60 every time they mothball them

steam for ever 21st December 2010 16:53

Class 70. We could make an event of it.

A new yearly holiday

As an enthusiast not a worker on the railways, for lack of enthusiasm it would be the class 66, Ive never liked them for some reason and have always preffered the variety i used to see. Although still not seen a class 58 'bone' in the flesh :(.

bramleyman 22nd December 2010 00:40

For me, the Class 37, as I found them to be the Most ugly looking loco ever. Yuk!

Can't argue with that comment, ugliest thing ever to run on British rails.

Mendipman319 22nd December 2010 20:53

whats a 157 look like then never seen 1 due you meen 59s

Dave Rowland 24th December 2010 11:34

I don't think we've got enough locos left nowadays to be scrapping any more than is necessary, to be honest; I'm quite happy to see ANY locos. When it comes to scrapping anything, then I'd be quite happy to see Pacers disappear! :)

saxokid 25th December 2010 00:37

None..........would save them.....from the cutters....

Bubblewrap 25th December 2010 12:33

It would be nice to use some locos for passenger trains instead of b****y units.:p:)

37260 27th December 2010 13:06

its got to be the class 70 so ugly but why stop there!

farren 5th January 2011 18:31

all of them then we could have some of the steam locos from the 5AT project if they ever make any of them.

ACE 6th January 2011 11:32

Assuming this topic is not meant to be taken 'too seriously'....

37260 :-- You may partially get your way with the ill fortune that has occurred to one of the "New" Class 70 Loco`s which sounds like its going to be a write off and return Stateside !!

That's been confirmed the lifting rig broke and it dropped 15 feet it is remaining on board ship and going back to Canada and will be scrapped by a US firm there the term Damaged beyond economical repair doesn't come into it apparently it's wrecked

Master Cutler 7th January 2011 20:27

Actually this thread has, since the price of scrap metal has risen, become very topical when taking the spate of metal thefts from preserved railways into account.:(
As for which class I'd scrap, well, after some long thoughts on the subject, I couldn't possibly choose.:)

ACE 7th January 2011 23:00

The 70's? Definitely something about them, after the initial 'shock' of seeing them...going to get one for the layout at some stage too!

Virtual Bonehead 26th April 2011 06:58

I'd choose the 'Sheds'. But I'd only scrap the wheels. This would render the locos unable to run, but still able to be scorned, sworn at, pelted with rotten veg, blamed for the ills of modern society, and of course painted in an ever-expanding selection of embarrassing liveries.

The 66s' newfound immobility would mean they'd be more reliably positioned for spotters to spot - unless of course they were loaded onto road transporters and driven around the country/world specifically to further annoy the enthusiast community, motorists, traffic wardens and the public in general.

Special legislation would be introduced, assuring that anyone manufacturing new wheels for a Class 66 would be first jailed, and then themselves pelted with rotten veg – on an hourly basis. For the purpose of categorisation, the 66s would be reclassified as bus shelters. On those grounds, images of the 'Sheds' would be ineligible for reproduction in railway magazines, and restricted to publications focusing solely on people waiting for buses - if indeed there are such things.

I hope this innovative and obviously quite well-thought-out idea is of satisfaction to all forum members.

Just kidding of course - I like all locos.

ACE 26th April 2011 14:56

Am I detecting a 'Non fan' of the ubiquitous sheds/dreds/freds etc etc Mr VB??? Haha

SouthEastern-465 26th April 2011 15:49

If I could scrap any diesal loco it'd be a 'Peak' they are ugly looking things, and I've never taken to them.

Well funny enough people are saying about scrapping the Class 70s, there actually one of my favorite locos along with Class 66, 67s, 20s.

farren 26th April 2011 16:25

The class 70 is what happens when an unsuspecting class 58 meets DR frankenstein it should be felt sorry for, before it is well and truly put down out off it's miserable excistence!!!!!!

I really don't dislike them. I think that like many people I just find them an easy focus for the frustration of diminishing variety. Thirty years ago I found the 47s' ubiquity offputting, but I can't get enough of them now. Indifference-bordering-on-veg-pelting-fantasy is just the inevitable consequence of over-familiarity I think. Agree with you on the 70s by the way.
