Whats Your favourite Class of Diesel Loco & Why ?
What is Your Favourite Class of Diesel Loco and Why ?
|
Class 66 7s GBRf. Always immaculately turned out. However someone decided to name 66726 "Sheffield Wednesday". C'mon I ask you, thats a joke surely. hehehehe
|
Class 37, probably the best of the early designs, long lived, good looking, used all over the country, jack of all trades. The Diesel equivilent of the Stanier Black Five!
Best wishes, John H-T. |
class 45/46
i spent many a happy hour watching these powerfull locomotives going about there tradein the sheffield area:) |
Stanboy29 -- Its always nice to see a Lovely Clean well presented Loco. The 66 in all its different colour schemes looks good when clean.
John H-T -- Can`t disagree with any comment there ! Makes sense. Markpturner -- Oh Yes The Class 45/46 !! Never did anything with Class46 but Loved Driving the Class 45 Mainly Scarboro -Leeds - Manchester & Leeds - Birmingham. Always felt like you were in something as Solid & unsinkable as a Battleship if that makes any sense. Thanks Guys for the comments :) |
26's and 37's.
So many memories of them when I lived in NW Scotland in the 80s, especially the 26's on a Summer evening - you could hear that distinctive 'phut phut phut phut' for miles! Saying that the 40s would be in for a shout - they were very, very impressive beasts when hammering past you on full power and at high speed. I once heard them described as "overweight, underpowered and built like a tank"! |
My Favourite has to be the Class 55 Deltic, as to me they purr like a cat, followed by the 31, 47, then 66. for reasons I know not. As for the 37's, YUK! I saw so much of them from Kings Lynn when their main loco, I began to hate them, as I thought them to be Ugly, plus other areas had many other classes, and to me, Kings Lynn was the last place in the UK to make the change to the class 47's that to me were Far more attractive.
|
For me lt has to be the classes 37 & 60, both excellent work horses as DB are now find ing out bout the 60's having to bring some of them back as the Yankee 66 can't pull the weight esp out of Robeston on the fuel trains. An as for the 37's the look an sound great the best first generation diesel around an the best multi-purpose loco built.
|
I'am with Bramleyman on this one with the the Deltic class, if I ever crossed over from being involved with steam to getting involved with diesels it would have to be one of those highly strung machines.
Although if I'am allowed to go slightly of the loco path I would have liked to see a class 124 Trans-Pennine MU set saved, mainly because off childhood memories of them and I think they were of of the best looking dmu's built. Cheers John |
class 52 loved the shape and the peak capped front
they had a great sound and the power to weight was good pity we did not do more work on hydrolics (spelling) it works for the Germans |
Prototype Deltic
My favorite diesel loco was the Prototype Deltic. Whilst firing at Kings Cross I was secondman on this loco on many occasions. For me it made a nice change to put the shovel down and put my feet up.:o
|
My favourite class of deisel loco has to be the Class 60. My first memories of railways were of Class 60s on freight workings through Scunthorpe.
|
All of the western hydraulics lovely locos
ccmmick. |
In order of importance, best last.
Deltic, Class 60, Class 47, class 37. |
Class 37, probably the best ones!! been around for years!! and still going strong.....:)
|
I always enjoyed driving class 47s,and also the 56s. A special mention for the class 37s - bloody horrible to prepare and work on but they would pull anything.
Worst locos for working on were the class 22s - the D63xx locos.Low in power, uncomfortable and very much prone to failure. Always enjoyed the class 31s,although not the most powerful. They had a most comfortable cab. |
Well for I would have to have a list so favourite last:
25, 47, Kestrel, 37, 17, 20, 44-specifically D1 the first ever diesel I saw |
In the early years I only liked trains for the way they looked, these locos that got me into 'thrash'! In the early years I was a spotter, these locos got me into 'bashing' - THE CLASS 37. Reliable, makes sweet music, nice shape and simply the best!
Class 37s have pretty much been a constant presence in my life. I've grew up with them and they are STILL HERE TODAY! They really have stood the test of time and I'm so pleased it's a engine that means to so much to me. Long live the 'Tractors'.... |

in the late 60's we used to call them bag of nails for the noise they made nowadays I agree long live the Tractors |
Must be class 37 always liked them from first time I saw one at Liverpool St when I was a young man.I managed to drive one and this confirmed why I have liked them all these years.:D:D:D
|
Realy got an interest in the "66" though..........
|
There can be only one....
Class 52 'Western' Stylish Non Standard Diesel Hydraulic Western Region Express Locomotive Just the most stylish Diesel ever built |
Class 52's for me too. Grew up watching the last 2 dozen in their last summer, 1976. Pathfinder was my absolute favourite and I was gutted when it was withdrawn. Saw it on an 82 wagon train at Wantage Road!
|
Most early classes(pre 1970) as long as they were not painted BLUE I did like Deltics,Brush type 4s & class 25s in two tone green
|
For me, it has to be the Class 50's in Large Logo livery. I had my first ride behind one in 1983 from Birmingham New Street to Bristol T.M. which got me hooked!! Big, powerful and fast!

Favourite loco classes for me would be class 33 (hence username) - developed a liking for them in the mid 1980s after seeing them perform on cross-London freights. Also have a big soft spot for the Westerns as that is the class I have the fondest memories of from childhood.
|
I used to like driving class 58s when we had them at Knottingley in the 1990s, they used to ride like a coach and were quieter than the class 56s that were the staple diet at the time.

I don't know why but class 20s used to do it for me. I liked 52s 55s and 37s in that order but 20s were definitely my favorite. I have driven a 37 over NNR and I have been in more 66s and 60s than I've had hot dinners but for some reason the 20s hold a spell over me.
|
Only one candidate, nothing else compares for its time, the D11-137 (later class 45) No matter what train you worked it was up to the job ! And for very heavy freight trains class 60.
|
Class 33 for me.
|
One more for the "Westerns" from me, they looked and sounded the business, loved the liveries like Desert Sand, Golden Ochre, etc when they were introduced, and their names were so romantic!
|
My favourite Diesel loco's are the Deltics, Class 40's. But I like the type 5 loco's the the 56's and 58's as they where the moden loco's. I'm in to.
|
Warships - they're so ugly you just have to love them. ;)
|
Favorite loco's
My personal faves were the deltics as even before you got to the station/ depot you could tell by the drone if there was a delly about, absolutely unmistakeable. But lest we forget the pairs of class 20's (choppers) that used to run the Derby to Skegness summer trains... used to take them from derby to notts and back just for the haulage, very memorable too... anyone else agree?
|
its got to be the class 26 for me then the class 76 woodhead electrics i bet not many railfans rate them.
|
For me it has to be the Class 52 Westerns.
After spending many happy railway summer holidays in Paignton with some of my fellow apprentices during my teen years through the early 70's the sound of a 52 still brings back fond memories. Travelling on the Peak hauled Devonian out of Derby and then switching to a Western at Temple Meads was the zenith of a young chap's summer holiday.:) |
i don't know what any of them are called so i'll just say anything that clags.
