60011 had failed with a burst oil pipe in the engine room the other one had come to tow it and the train back to Toton.

I've got news for all who'd like to own a class 60 loco or more! DBSchenker is putting class 60's up for sale. If you or a Diesel group would like to preserve a good number of them now is the time to do so. Plus there selling 08 and 09 shunters and more class 56's.

Here are details at http://www.rail.dbschenker.co.uk/dis...disposals.html and www.wnxx.com/layout/navigation/forsale.htm

Hope this tip off has helped.

Well considering their age and lack of maintenance I'm not surprised.
By the way I have driven class 60's since they first came out and maintained properly will show a class 66 a "clean pair of heels" any day !

Wakey spotter 13th September 2010 18:43

Cheers for that 21Aman. On a like for like basis then with all the same conditions and same load which would probably perform best ? A Class 56,58,59,60 or 66 In your opinion if you don`t mind me asking :)
Regards n Thanks

Depends on the route and load of train and weather conditions a 60 was by far the best on heavy trains in all weathers,a 56 was a plodder but would get you there,a 58 was good unless it rained then they would continually "slip",so would a 66 they would "slip" at speed on a bad rail.Sorry don't know anything about class 59s.

Wakey spotter 13th September 2010 22:11

Cheers for that reply !! Very Informative !
Thanks
Kris :)

I have some very good news for diesel fans. Tonight I logged off for a bit and went down to the pub in hale (The Railway, which has a picture of a Princess Royal class on the sign) which I rarely do now nowadays. I always carry a local timetable for services at the station, which is 30yrds away. Now at about 20:05 the barriers began to lower, so looking at the timetable I saw that now passenger train was scheduled, so instead of standing outside the pub and watching as normal I downed the half I was drinking and went to the station.

I thought that it could be a diverted train, a ICI mineral Freight, or if I'm lucky a steam movement. As it turned out the freight was correct, and to my surprise a very grubby 60039 charged through at full pelt towards Manchester. I savoured the moment as best I could despite the train's high speed.

As the flashing light rounded thew corner I did not leave streaight away, but closed my eyes and listened to the rails singing, until it was too faint to hear.

Seems a bit much perhaps, but I may have just witnessed hsitory, at least personally, as I may not see another working now. I think that their withdrawal from service is a huge mistake, but nothing I can do to stop DBS ruining our railway.
I hope and pray one is preserved, and I have never said that about a diesel before.

The class 60: surely the best diesel locomotive to be produced by this country to date.

pre65 30th September 2010 22:03

According to Railway Herald one has just been refurbished and repainted in Tata colours for a new contract.

Deathbyteacup 1st October 2010 08:33

I've seen two 60's this week in Manchester at the Aggregate place near Salford Crescent. I have to admit it's made my week. :)

It's nice to see any British built loco on the mainline, specially Brush ones. :)

As far as I know about 15 class 60's are going to be re-furbished,60099 has already had attention and has been repainted in the new "TaTa" colours (Silver with Blue Logo) also 60015 is reported as undergoing a re-furb.It appears that certain trains require the higher power tractive effort that a 60 has but not a 66.So you may still see members of this class of loco about.:)

steam for ever 1st October 2010 17:34

This has made me ever so happy I must say.
Ideally all 100 members of the class would be kept, but that remains to be seen.

Steam for Ever !! Such a touching posting. So Glad you enjoyed seeing that Loco :)

I totally agree 66 were the same pulling 38 loaded HAA's out of Hunslet East, that lasted 2 days then we got 60's no further probs.

pre65 24th January 2011 14:16

I see in this weeks "Railway Herald" some class 60's are going to be fully refurbished.

Good news.:D

They will be spending £3 million to make 7 "super class 60's" and extend their working life by 15 years. 14 more will follow later. All this will be done at Toton.

ccmmick 24th January 2011 14:29

Good news a lot better than any American locos

Wonder if they re-number them too it would be nicer to look for a 601xx than a 70xxx

steam for ever 22nd February 2011 13:44

Seen a 60 today about mid morning when out freight spotting. It was 60045 I think now and it had a nameplate which I did not have chance to read. Still in EWS livery and rather grubby. It was probably bound for Peak Forest.

The Permanent Way Institution

ACE 24th February 2011 10:53

Good to see DBS putting some money in creating the so called 'super 60's', 60011 looks good in the Red livery, plans for 21 of them to be overhauled for at least another 15 years service..plenty of spares available!

steam for ever 24th February 2011 14:26

I saw 60011 today on the mid chehsire freight. Looked great.

Barry Of Blackrod 30th March 2011 22:33

60s At Peak Forrest On Monday 28/3/11

60045 was on the Hope Street empty stone back to Ceemex at Dove Holes and the silver 60099 was shunting in Dove Holes Quarry its own train the Tunstead-Oakleigh afternoon train was cancelled, My photos taken on Monday are on the Gallery. Baz

saxokid 6th April 2011 02:32

Has anyone got any pictures of these new super class 60"s??

steam for ever 21st May 2011 20:07

Saw 60045 The Permanent Way Institution today thundering back to Peak Forest with a train of empties.
The loco was still in EWS livery and fairly filthy, byt the nameplate was nicely polished. The train was shorter than usual, perhaps only half the length of the average train.

ACE 30th May 2011 12:47

60013 reported 'gone wiz bang' this week sadly,28th May, another 'leg out of bed' by the sound of it too
