class 153's and 156's

with these DMU's people think they are just boxes on wheels (they do look like that though)

i collect them and with them you buy the loco the passenger bit and the guard brake,

unlike a steam train you have to buy a the loco then some passenger coaches and the brake/guard

a box with a nice colour or 3-more unmaching(dosent have to be) steam train-coaches-brake

what would you rather buy ;)

Deathbyteacup 10th January 2010 11:13

A lump hammer to hit you with.

What are you waffling about?

swisstrains 10th January 2010 22:30

Hi Daniel,
I can see your point as DMU's do appear to be self-contained and better value for money. However, I think you will be hard pushed to convince the majority of forum members that they are better than a loco and separate coaches. Personally if I was modelling modern day British railways I would want DMU's but I would also try and find an excuse to have a loco-hauled train.:)

P.S. Please excuse the Man Utd. supporter.

Deathbyteacup 11th January 2010 07:16

I have no such affiliation to said team, but when they are playing it's quite impossible for me to get to the ELR because the people I generally go down with are wanting to watch the match.

And the prospect, with three torn ligaments and cruthces, in the snow, of going on one's own is somewhat not there.

ccmmick 11th January 2010 09:57

I cant see the point of building a nice layout and then buying 153s and 156s to run on it
Dont you think its better to have a nice steam loco and coaches i know which i would rather have.

ccmmick.

In that case what's your excuse for being miserable and nasty to one of our younger forum members?

If you're going all Chinese on us, what you need is a QJ 2-10-2. Or there's always an American 'Big Boy'.....:)

ccmmick 11th January 2010 12:47

I would rather have a 9F

oh yes oh yes oh yesssssssss! :)

Sadly the only QJ's I've seen in the flesh were in the China Railway Museum in Beijing :(

Eccles71B 11th January 2010 16:57

Doesn't the NRM have a QJ?

I do have a slight soft spot for both 153 and 156 even though my username does not suggest it.
They are very comfortable trains indeed and uselful ones too.
I take a 156 part of the way to work each morning and the trip is very enjoyable.
The 153s were rebuilt from two coach 150s which are also nice to ride on and Hornby produce models of those.

The self contained nature of DMUs is very useful so may I suggest this.
If you want to build a kit there are several steam rail cars on sale which are good for branch lines.
What ever floats your boat really and remember its your choice.
Have you ever ridden a steam train?
It is easier to add more coaches with loco hauled trains though.

Rebuilt from 155's SFE - a bit more luxurious than the awful 150's (some drivers refer to 150's as 'Burger Vans'!) :D

garrat 11th January 2010 18:23

A nice big Garratt with a record number of coal wagons for me

Its not a QJ, QJ's are derived from a Soviet design, the China Railway loco at the NRM is a KF7 and was built in Gorton, Manchester http://www.flickr.com/photos/wiseman...7621001762762/ :)

garrat 11th January 2010 18:47

Yes it was built by The Vulcan works I dont think we have a QJ in the uk

I think the only QJ's outside of China are in the USA and I think maybe in the DPRK (North Korea) , and of course they are similar locos in various parts of the former Soviet Union........

garrat 11th January 2010 18:53

Thanks for your pics in gallery keep em coming

Dave Rowland 11th January 2010 18:57

Sorry chaps - memory bank shutdown; I visited the NRM in 1988, saw a BIG Chinese loco. I'd just assumed (recently) that it must have been a QJ, but I've just checked my notes from that day, and it was a 4-8-4, numbered 607. Ooops.

Its a beauty and a beast, its just a shame it doesn't have a red star on the front and China Railway logo's on it! :)

Thats a good photopic and added to my favorite sites! :)

I'm not really a steam man, but I've always liked Chinese steam, its a pity that I've missed the boat for mainline steam. :(

Well its the youngun's layout so let him have the stock he likes, no matter how strange it may seem to only want 153's & 156's :)

There are some good DMU models out there, personally I would quite like to see a Strathclyde 156 running about, I'm sure Hornby did a half decent example a few years back...........:)

Tosh! When I went to the NRM and saw this great big Chinese loco, I travelled to Southampton on a class 155 unit (later converted into 2 class 153's). So it's all connected....;)

Actually, those 155's were pretty good on that service. I'd have preferred what we had before though - 33 (or possibly 47) + mark 1 stock. Sometime in the summer of '88 (I THINK) the 155's were all temporarily withdrawn owing to a door defect, and for about three weeks we got the Cromptons back! :)

garrat 11th January 2010 20:59

yes a loco with mk 1 stock.I just cant get into emus and dmus .A mate of mine who is a Driver instuctor Drove the first electric 315 to St Pancras in 1981 and that was the begining of boredom for me getting to London. He ended up Training Drivers down in Brighton.

Now you're talking:cool:

Personally in this unit orientated time, the '153's' following conversion from '155's' look at home on our network rather than crappy 'Pacers' (arguably the worst riding units EVER???)

Anon Mouse 13th January 2010 00:26

ha ha ha each to their own I suppose, but dispite an embarasing fetish for 141's I would rather a 101, 117 or 119 unitwise :)
