I bet SFE is jumping with joy.

"Simplicity is the acme of design." However, I'm not suggesting that 60163 is a "simple" locomotive! The technology is just rather more robust I guess. So, perhaps a steam locomotive production line is not so crazy after all.

Deathbyteacup 23rd December 2009 19:23

In the current (rather exceptional) circumstances, steam probably does work better than any other form of traction. Sadly it won't snow 365 days a year.

Not to take away from the moment which is really lovely and great publicity for Tornado and steam in general!

Great piece of action which should bring in more money to help pay for this great locomotive!

Best wishes for Christmas.

Bah! Humbug.........the Tornado hauled train couldn't have been very popular if they were able to offer the seats to 100 stranded passengers.:D

ccmmick 23rd December 2009 21:34

It is a shame that nothing was said on the 6o'clock news today.

ccmmick.

klordger1900 23rd December 2009 22:25

I bet they more than covered their costs but with that kind of power I expect a few more coaches wouldnt be a strain anyway!

garrat 24th December 2009 07:53

Yes I wonder why nothing on the tv

springs branch mickey 24th December 2009 09:47

What a shame a good story wasn't covered by the T.V. It shows that there is always room for the older technology in this Hi-tech world . This was a great opportunity missed.

It seems a lot of the steam tours are suffering with no bums on seats and the Tornado trips are a little more expensive.I do a lot of these trips and this time of year have children and grandchildren to get gifts for so have to cut the cloth so to speak but next year I will be a bum on a seat along with my buddies bums. All the best John

Steam Train Rescue

Just to let you know it was me that broke this story to Radio Kent. I was on the train with my little boy as a treat for him (me!)
I was interviewed on the John Warnet show yesterday morning at about 9.12 am uk time. The show can probably be accessed on bbc iplayer or the radio kent website:)

Well done "flatfish" for breaking the story, hope the little chap (and you)enjoyed it:).

With regards to not being mentioned on the main BBC news, I suppose it was not actually important enough for them, no politicians involved !
Dont know about Sky though.

How about keeping a couple of Black 5's stationed in the frozen south for when the modern technical marvels go whatsits up the next time we get another flake of snow

Pesmo 24th December 2009 14:55

Messrs Bunker and Allatt were interviewed at some length on Radio 5 in the earlier hours of the morning a few hours ago. They mentioned this little triumph

klordger1900 24th December 2009 16:16

My dad told me about the steam train rescue that evening and I thought he said that he had seen it on the TV? He lives in Norfolk so he wont be listening to Radio from Kent. He also thought it was something to do with rescuing the Eurostar trains as he didnt hear the full story, clearly not a St.Pancras train as I dont think they like steam on that line!!

GBRf_66709 24th December 2009 19:34

Not meaning to brag or anything, but that is my photo on the BBC news report :)

62440 24th December 2009 19:36

Hope they paid you for the use of it Craig.

Regards, 62440.

ccmmick 24th December 2009 20:05

And why not its a great picture.

ccmmick.

klordger1900 24th December 2009 20:18

Nice one Craig - I notice that Tornado was dragging 13 carriages, so no wonder they had 100 spare seats to give away. Also the Thumper sounds great. The snow adds so much atmosphere to all the recent pix and vids. Cheers.
