DB Schenker Deltic
Hi All.
Whats this i heard from a friend today that DB Schenker have got a Deltic what are they going to do with it. I just hope to god they are not going to paint it in that awful red. ccmmick. |

Is it Nimbus ? :D:D:D Two questions ! 1) Which one ? 2) Why ? |
Hi CCMMICK, Is your friend getting confused between DB Schenker and DRS? They acquired a Deltic recently.
Regards, 62440. |
Well i dont know all he told me is what i have said ????
|
I very much doubt that DB Schenker will be splashing cash on that sort of purchase, with the financial state they are in every penny is being cut back just to make the books look a bit healthier! Those beasts are too old for any serious work these days.
|
I have just phoned him he said that he read it in a rail mag but which one he cant remember so i dont know????.

Are you just trying to wind us "oldies" up ? We all like a laugh and a joke but your obsession with this matter is getting a little tiresome. As and when (or IF :D) you find any accurate information on the matter then I'm sure we would all be interested to hear but until that time I think the matter should be considered closed. |
Ok Rassy.
We have been over htis in other threads but I will tell you here. At MOD ashchurch they seem not to know anything about such a loco. Where ever they have got it from it probably was not here. |
Nice to see DRS using deltic on main line dutys.............:)

Gordon Highlander purchased by Martin Walker
From the DPS website
Gordon Highlander purchased by Martin Walker Thursday, December 31 2009 @ 21:30 PM GMT Martin Walker is delighted to announce completion of the purchase of D9016 'Gordon Highlander'. The loco should be collected from the HNRC facility at Barrow Hill early next week by 55 022 and moved to its new home at the East Lancashire Railway. Both Deltics should be in operation at the Railway on Saturday 9th of January and Martin looks forward to seeing many there for what promises to be an entertaining day. It is also planned to have both locomotives running on the ELR on February 13th, after which the operational engine from D9016 will transferred to 55022 as a short term measure to get RSG back into full working order at the earliest opportunity. Once the overhauled unit is completed, the plan is to use D9016 as a running in test bed for this unit. |
Purely by coincidence I found a link to a fairly comprehensive Deltic related site. http://www.napier-chronicles.co.uk

Looking at the detailed history of each loco it seems engines were swapped over on a regular basis, twice or three time a year ! Was that usual with the more conventional diesel engined locos ? PS Just been viewing the photo record of power unit 406 being totally rebuilt at Paxmans workshop. I dare not think what the bill was for that job. Much as I like building engines I would fight shy of a job like that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The Deltic engine was a highly strung beast which on a regular basis used to throw "a leg out of bed" ie a piston through the crankcase, this with other design issues made it easier to repair out of the loco,so when there was a problem the defective unit was lifted out and a spare dropped in, all in an eight hour shift if I remember correctly. So hence the reason for a few engine changes each year, I'am not aware of this being carried out on any other class though. Cheers John |
