Class 66 Hot Plates!!
Do any class 66 drivers actually use the hot plates in the cab to make a cup of tea or something? A strange question I know but interested to know!

on early turns i used to take a small frying pan bacon egg tomatoes and mushrooms to work with me, LOVELY sat in Meldon Quarry. And yes a big mug of tea. Must get a hotplate fitted in my Somerfield Van. ccmmick. |
It is great to see some traditions from the steam days still being used on modern loco, except frying pans are used now instead of shovels!
|
ccmmick - you might need an extra battery if you try using that hot plate in your van??

[QUOTE=ccmmick;35482]You can shit on shovel but not in a frying pan as there is no fire to clean it in on a modern loco.
I didn't wish to know that! :o |

How does a driver / fireman cope ? And do "modern" locos have facilities ? |
Perhaps a bucket is provided, but then again it would not be nice for the modern train spotter with the lit cabs.
I have heard of such luxuries, but not in many locos. You are all right on DMUs, whenever stopped at a station for more than 2 mins you can use the passender loos. Here is a disgusting thought, would the hotplates evaporate such waste? Any drivers to help us? |

they certainly do john

On a lot of old locos you had a toilet in the engine room and you had two men but no such facilities on modern locos you have to wait untill you go into a loop or stopped at a red light in an emergency i have just stopped anywere.
When you have to go you have to go. ccmmick. |

Would you end up with a ring of fire if you got it wrong??

nice one chuff chuff - I suppose that should be reserved for No.2 cab!!
|
This of course opens up a new vision of exactly what is meant by the term 'dumped loco'.

The Class 66 has a fan assisted heating element. On the first position it blows warm air but not enough to heat the cab on a cold day. In positions two and three the fan becomes very noisy and blows very hot air onto your legs. Many drivers prefer to switch the heating to first position and set the Hotplate to maximum. That seems the best compromise. For food if you place a few pieces of ballast on the hotplate then place a Steak & Kidney Pie wrapped in tinfoil on the stones, it cooks a treat. Very few drivers I know still have the billycan of old, I would say they may still be used on Ballast Trains by DBS, Heavyhaul, DRS or GBRf traincrews. Class 37 & 47 had urinals but their use ceased when boilers finished on Diesels, this due to the water tanks not being refilled on servicing points. Other locos may have had urinals but I can only comment on Engines I worked on.

Maybe the 'second man' position should be reinstated, then there would always be someone prepared to take the pi** out of the driver! :)

In these days of equality, how do female drivers cope?
|
In the event of not being able to utilize the time-honoured cliche 'tie a knot in it' I suppose they must have to resort to Tena Lady? ...or fill a balloon? Seriously though - no idea!
|
There is a lady freight driver I speak to now and again on another forum...I suppose I could ask, but how to frame the question delicately enough so that she doesn't think I'm some kind of weirdo pervert?!
|
They probably use them panties that are common at pop concerts where you cant leave your place at the front for a pee so you go in your liner then try not to drink too much.

I get the feeling that this thread is going down the tubes!:p

Far Too Much Information in some of these posts!!! However, back to the topic! I seem to remember that the class 47? also had a hot plate/ring in one cab. And one of the best breakfasts I ever had was fried on a shovel, unfortunately I can't remember which loco! as I was rather young at the time. My best efforts always fail to quite match up to the memory! |
what i have been told they do :/
strange :P but a good idea because you dont have to stop off at a burger bar :) |
A cooker on a 66 is vital on a 12 hour ballast turn in the middle on nowhere land.
I f you sit on the second mans side, and fall asleep with your feet on the dashboard you can cook your steel toe cap boots. It takes ages for them to cool down. |

I dunno, a ring to boil your kettle, newspapers and hands-free driving - it's like 'job on the council' as they used to say:);)
